They are possessed by demons. They are trapped by the soul ties they have accumulated over the years with demons, reminds of that ponderous chain worn by Jacob Marley which he forged link by link through following demonic leads into darkness, going farther and farther from the light with each temptation embraced until now, they hate the light because it is their only salvation from the insanity they suffer, but now it is so far out of their reach they won't ever be able to stand in its efficacious glow again. So, they laugh, and they mock us, but we should pity them, for their maniacal laughter is a sure sign of their unrecoverable insanity and despair. We could pray for them, but I honestly think they are too far gone and the aid that would come from our love will be vehemently rejected. Tough love is called for, the extremely painful process of driving their demons out, and banishing them to hell. The subject could die from it, it is that intense, and that is what I mean by too far gone.
